Photographing Local Forest is an ongoing project. Western Washington forest is dense with undergrowth. This makes the task of finding elements that dominate without a lot of distractions hard to find. Once a subject is found, however, optimal light is needed to enhance the texture and shame of the subject. This requires paying attention to the time of day. It requires many visits to the same location to get it right.
Texture and shame make it possible for the viewer to maybe want to linger a little longer with the image. Photography is a two-dimensional representation of a three-dimensional world. Light direction with the right intensity allows the flat image to have the illusion of depth. The illusion is created by what you bring to the viewing. Your experience memory of object compensates for the limitations of the image to create the illusion of depth if the shadow/highlights are believable.
If you were not aware of the many forests available to you within the boundaries of King County here are some of them: St. Edward Park, Denny Park, Bellevue Botanical Gardens, The Seattle Arboretum, Carkeek Park and Beach, Golden Gardens Park, East Montlake Park, Foster Point Island, Seward Park. There are many more that I have yet to explore.
